Going #vegan For The Month Of February
The title pretty much says it all. For the month of February, we will be 100% vegan. You’ll be surprised to know that this wasn’t my idea. It was Corey’s. Yes, really. Corey suggested going vegan for a month. I can’t say that I hadn’t thought about this myself, but I never thought Corey would agree to it. Little did I know, he was thinking the same thing! (In regard...

My Gardening Plans This Year
This will be my first year with a real - as in, not on a balcony - garden. I plan on going all out. I found this site that explains when to start planting, etc in your area and looked through that to get an idea of what I could plant without driving myself crazy. I didn’t want to be planting everything at the same time and this site really helped me to figure out a schedule. Hopefully...

A Goal.
I want to be able to do 10 standard - as in toes, not knees on the ground - push-ups in a row by the end of February. As of right now I can do half a push-up. That means I can get into the push-up position and go half-way down. Just wanted to put this goal out there so I’d be sure to do it.

What's for Dinner? [01.08-01.21]
Haven’t done one of these in a while. Got some cookbooks from the library and have been making a lot of delicious food using their recipes. Figured I’d share what I’ve been making the past two weeks. [Sun] Corey cooked some taco “meat” (fake ground meat plus beans with taco seasoning) [Mon] Rice and beans and a homemade salsa (totally made up recipes… came out...

Oh Great. It's One of *Those* Posts.
I don’t understand it, but every year I get sucked into the whole “new years resolutions” thing. Maybe it’s because so many of my online friends talk about it or maybe it’s because I really, really like making lists. What ever the reason is, here are my goals for 2012. [1] Get to my goal weight. Well, get within 10lbs of my goal weight. As I’ve said for the...

Three Years Old
It’s hard for me to believe that you’re three years old. You were just a baby. Helpless, crying when you wanted your bottle or when you were tired or when a stranger would make eye contact with you. But now, you’re a boy.  I still remember visiting you in the NICU. Wanting to take you home the day I got discharged and not being allowed to. Crying that whole Shabbat because I...

Switching Things Up A Bit
Homeschooling has been going great. Asher and I have been having a lot of fun. Asher has been learning a lot. And I even found a way to include Kovi! [Pictures of what we done since my last post about homeschooling will be after my little “announcement” here.] I have been reading this book  and I really like it. The things that the author says make sense to me and it’s basically...

50 lbs of Sugar
edwardspoonhands: According to the New York Times, the average American drinks 50 gallons of soda per year. That’s 189 liters. A liter of soda has 129 grams of sugar.  189 liters * 129 g/l = 24400 g, or 24.4 kg or, yes, roughly 50 lbs of sugar per year…JUST FROM SODA…GAHHH!!!! If you’re wondering, that’s 83,000 calories of soda per year. I think maybe I’ve solved the peculiar mystery of the...

Sh-sh-sh-shrinking!
What’s more important?: Fulfilling your craving or getting to your goal weight? That’s what I have been asking myself every day - sometimes several times a day - for the past four weeks. I started a diet with several members of my family and I am finally losing some of the weight I gained with Kovi. In 4 weeks I have lost over 6 pounds.  I feel like I can do it. I can really get to my...

Homeschooling: The rest of the week
Day 2 went so-so. We got off to a very late start because all morning was dedicated to unpacking and cleaning with the help of my mother. After lunch we went down to the basement where the new, ginormous map is and we found Cleveland and then our country for the week: China. I don’t know much about China and I did so little research that I probably just should have chucked the whole idea of...

To A Beautiful Lady
A year ago today was the last time I saw you. We talked for a little while. I told you about all the Hanukkah gifts I had gotten for Asher. And I told you about the different cravings and aversions I had at that point in my pregnancy with Kovi. We held hands and we just sat with each other. We said shema. Rather, I said shema for you while covering your eyes because I just had a feeling. I kissed...

Homeschooling: Take 2
Last week I tried out my hand in homeschooling Asher. It didn’t go all the great. The first day didn’t go badly, the second day Asher wasn’t interested AT ALL - probably because I used the same activity (drawing) just with a different subject. After that I got sick and didn’t feel up to actively teaching and “school” kind of ceased to exist. But today we were...

Flickr Isn't Free... Enough For Me.
I have been uploading my “artsy” photos to flickr for a while now, but as I neared their free 200 photos limit*, I found myself looking for some other place to store and exhibit my more artistic photos. After searching around other flickr-esque sites, I decided on just creating another - only photos - blog. Enjoy. *You are allowed to post as many photos as you would like on a free...

Homeschooling: Day 1
The first day went pretty smoothly. We focused on the letters A and aleph. And the shapes circle and square. The “A” Asher did great with.  He’s been trying really hard to write an A for the past couple of weeks because he knows it’s the first letter of his name and he’s getting really close. He knows it’s a triangular shape and usually ends up writing a...

Up For a Bit Of Homeschooling?
I feel like Asher and I rarely ever do anything. Sure, we’ll color, read, sing the ABCs and aleph-bet (and a whole array of other songs from “Where is Thumbkin” to anything by Weezer), but I find that lately, by the end of the day, I’m out of ideas and resort to letting Asher sit next to me at the computer while he watches YouTube videos and I “surf the web”...

Top 10 Things I Won't Miss About Apartment Living
We’re moving into our first (and potentially only) house next week and I am so excited! Apartment living just ain’t my style. I’m a private, quiet, mildly antisocial person and having to see and make small talk with virtual strangers nearly every day raises my blood pressure just a bit. I understand that there is more responsibility with owning a house, but I would much rather...

Veg.
In some recent posts I mentioned that I am no longer eating chicken. I felt like I should explain why. But please just keep in mind that as with everything on my blog - upsherin, sheitles, etc - I’m only applying these things to myself. I don’t judge or look down upon people who do it differently because, while I believe that I’m right, there is no guarantee that I am.  I...

Parve Shabbas? Surely you jest!
We have recently been straying away from chicken (the only “meat” we actually eat) so I have been making dairy Shabbas menus. But this week I unintentionally created a completely parve menu for this Shabbas. I don’t know why I think this is so cool, I just do. Anyway, here’s the menu. [Whole wheat challah] [Fish with fresh thyme, salt, garlic(?), onion (?)] —...
