(Could be seasonal affective disorder, but) I think that if we all started focusing on the good things in our life we may have more positive things to say and more positive thoughts in our head. With it being around Thanksgiving I’ve seen a lot of people doing this, but even after Thanksgiving is through, I hope that we can continue to focus on the blessings in our life rather than the things that get us down. We’d all be much happier people that way.

A-Thank Ya! Top 20

My sister tagged me to do this on Facebook. You have to write down 20 things that you’re thankful for. I decided to post it here as well.

[1] I am thankful for Corey always being there when I need him and making me feel beautiful.

[2] I am thankful that God has given me nearly one wonderful year with Asher so far…

[3] I am thankful that God has brought us back to Cleveland so that we can be close to my family.

[4] I am thankful that I have a close relationship with my mother and can tell her pretty much anything.

[5] I am thankful for my friends… you make life happily unique.

[6] I am thankful that I get along well with Corey’s side of the family.

[7] I am thankful that there are people a lot less shy than me who make me feel welcome when I just can’t say ‘hi’.

[8] I am thankful that my Grandma gets to bond with Asher on a weekly basis.

[9] I am thankful that I have nephews that I can trust to watch Asher while I’m busy.

[10] I am thankful that God created medicine so that my thyroid can’t get the best of me.

[11] I am thankful that I have a Facebook account because I know I would have lost contact with a lot of great people if I didn’t.

[12] I am thankful for Dr. Seuess who always seems to be able to calm Asher down.

[13] I am thankful for the J. Glen Smith Health Center on St. Claire Ave. that gives out free vaccines to children under 18.

[14] I am thankful that Case waived Corey’s tuition and pays him to go to school there.

[15] I am thankful that cardigans are back in style.

[16] I am thankful that I have a camera and the ability to take frame-worthy photos.

[17] I am thankful that water is free.

[18] I am thankful that Miles Farmers Market has amazing deals on fruits and veggies on Mondays and Tuesday.

[19] I am thankful that Asher is not a picky eater.

[20] I am thankful that no matter what, I know in my heart God will always take care of me.

Why I Got Vaccinated

DISCLAIMER: These are my reasons for getting vaccinated (and why I got Asher vaccinated and suggested Corey get vaccinated… which he did). I am not saying that anyone should or should not get vaccinated. That is a decision that you need to make for yourself.

[1] That thyroid disease that I have mentioned in the past is also an autoimmune disease. That means that when I get sick, not only do I get hit harder (symptoms are more severe), but it takes me a lot longer to get over it. (Though I wasn’t diagnosed until January 2008, thinking back to my school days, it now makes sense that I would have to miss a week of school just for a cold.)

[2] My father has an autoimmune disease. Now that I live in the same city as my parents I see them a lot. I will not be the one to get my father sick.

[3] My grandmother is in her 90’s (lives with my parents) and has had cancer… twice. Though she, thank God, has been doing great for the past few years, I can’t imagine that at her age and with her health history that her immune system would be categorized as “healthy”. I will not be the one to get my grandmother sick.

I’m sure if I sat down longer I could think of more fact-driven, rather than personal reasons, but for now… I think this explains it well enough.

Weight Loss Blog?

I’ve thought about doing a weight loss blog. Trying to make it an interactive type thing where people could share stories, advice, etc to keep people motivated. I’m definitely lacking some motivation lately with my diet and could use a boost… would anyone be interest in participating?

______________

It’s not writer’s block. I have the idea in my head. It’s more of an emotional block. It brings up such a rise in me that I can’t focus my thoughts. I hate being a hypocrite. I preach that one should not let others dictate their emotions. The only person I can change is myself. But sometimes I just get an overwhelming urge to smack people upside the head.

And We'll Just Laugh Along Because We Know That None Of Them Have Felt This Way

I just had a really nice lunch with Asher. We dined on some lightly breaded and fried eggplant. I think we both agree it was scrumptious. Better than the food was the company. Other than in my pictures and videos, people don’t get to see this side of Asher. He’s a sweet, funny, clever little guy. He can’t speak yet, but he does make some purposeful noises. After we finished eating he started “talking”. He said to me, “Bub bub bub bub.” So I took out my camera and started, at first, recording him on video, then went to taking pictures of him. At one point he made a high pitched noise, so I copied him and he laughed, which made me laugh. So he made the high pitched noise again. I copied him, he laughed, I laughed and so on. It may not have been your average joke, but Asher and I thought it was quite funny…. and coming from a 10 month old — how is he already 10 months old?! Some times I feel like I’m still pregnant with him! (No, I did not just say I’m pregnant!) — that was a pretty impressive joke, as well.

I used to hate you, Monday. You were the first day of the school week. The first day of the work week. How I loathed you so. But now… now you’re go to Miles Farmers Market and reap the benefits of the awesome Monday deals day. Monday has actually moved to the top of my list of favorite days of the week (I always feel so healthy when I step into Miles Market). So Monday, I take back all those mean things I ever said about you. Love ya to bits!

I said nuts.

The gematria of nuts is equal to the gematria of sin plus (or is it minus?) one so you can’t eat nuts on Rosh Hashana has always irked me. Is one really that insignificant of a number? If I were 20 and wanted to go get some beer at the liquor store would it be alright to show my I.D. and say I’m 21 minus 1 so give me some alcohol? And isn’t God “One”? Seems like a pretty significant number to me.

So, the moral of the story is….? Eat lots of nuts next Rosh Hashana? Try to unlearn some of the things you learned in high school? I don’t know. Just wanted to share this thought with you. Not sure there is any moral to this story.

Them Sidelocks

On Rosh Hashana my parents had some guests over who mentioned that they were thinking of not doing an upsherin for their son. Well, he’s almost 3 and has not yet had a haircut, so I think it’s safe to say that they will be giving him an upsherin, but it got me thinking. Why wouldn’t someone want to give their son an upsherin? They had said that it wasn’t a halacha, just a tradition — I can neither confirm nor deny that statement, but even if it isn’t halacha, why wouldn’t you want to wait until he’s 3 to give him a haircut? Now, this opinion of mine is in the same vein as my opinion on sheitles. I’m totally cool with people doing whatever they want, but for me, it just makes no sense.

I think by now most people know that I love payos. Always have — even before I was frum. And, needless to say, Asher will be waiting until he’s 3 years old to get his first haircut. I want him to have ginormously thick payos. But that’s beside the point. The point is, to me, payos feel the most Jewish out of anything that a man can possibly wear. A kippa can be unnoticed since it’s on the top of the head. Or it can be a similar color to the color of your hair. Or it can be so tiny that all it covers up is that cowlick you can never seem to tame. Even tzitzis, while they are a direct commandment in the written Torah, most people who aren’t Jewish have no idea what they are. Payos though - and I’m not referring to those lame ones that you can just stick behind your ear - those can’t be hidden and most people know that people with those kinds of sidelocks are Jews.

I know, it’s more important to act as a Jew than to look like one, but what’s wrong with wanting to show off your Jewish-ness on a daily basis?

If my opinion matters to you...

… then watch Modern Family.
